Safety While Backpacking and Mountaineering

For many people the idea of heading out into the mountains or forests with the intent of staying out for a number of days sounds ridiculous. For others, the idea sounds like an adventure and they’d like nothing better. The ability to survive in the wilderness requires a bit of knowledge and for most people some specific pieces of gear.

If you are heading out into an area to go backpacking or mountaineering requires a good understanding of the area, terrain, weather patterns, survival equipment and the people you are with. Above all leave home with safety gear and know how to use it. Even if you have been on the trail before, bring a map. This bit of information can help you in the event of an accident or if you are lost for some unknown reason. Make sure you have waterproof matches, an emergency blanket, first aid kit, and a shelter with you suited to the conditions. plenty of food and a way to treat water is also important.

Knowing the weather patterns is also important. If you are from the area and have been watching the weather patterns for years you may think you know better than you do, the micro-climates of the area. Be sure to talk to rangers or others that can give you specifics about what to expect.

For certain know the terrain you are heading into as well as the capabilities of the group. It is easy to get into trouble when you are not prepared physically for the strenuous activity some trips require.

Few people should reasonably consider heading out on a backpacking trip alone, so if you are thinking about it and you are not sure, then it is probably safe to say that you are not one of those people. So, know the people you are with on the trip. Know their strengths and their weaknesses or injuries. Most of all communicate. Check in regularly and be honest with your companions about how you feel and what you think you are capable of doing that day. Be safe, have fun.

Canyoneering

An exciting sport that some rock climbers may have heard about but is less known until recently in the United States is called canyoneering. Outside of the United States it is also known as canyoning. Canyoneering has become more well known in recent years not necessarily because of a huge increase in canyoneers, but because of what most would call a tragic event that occured.

Canyoneering, for those that don’t know about it, obviously has something to do with canyons. Canyons are often not just a simple channel that was cut by one river at one time. Canyons are often a maze of many channels all leading down to a main river channel. A great example of this is the Grand Canyon in Arizona. Canyoneering is often the descent down one of these channels and it includes a number of different types of methods used to get down to the end point that may be the main river or could just be part of a hike that one goes out on. When canyoneering you will often swim through channels, jump into pools, repel down cliffs, climb through a variety of pitches. Routes one embarks on can be very short or very long and can vary in technical difficulty to an easy stroll.

Canyoneering became more well known from a recent accident involving Aron Ralston. Aron was canyoneering in Utah when he found himself trapped and unable to get out  of a situation. In order to free himself from his predicament he chose to cut off his own arm that was pinned by a rock. Recently a movie called “127 hours” was made about this very incident.

Canyoneering is not an easy sport and really should not be attempted alone or by inexperienced individuals. If you want to try it out, go with a group, or pay a guide to take you. Remember, you only have two arms.

Learn About Sporstbooks

Betting on sports has a history as long as sports does. In the 19thcentury, horse racing was popular in the United States. Those that bet on the outcome were generally people in the upper class. But, after the Civil War, horse tracks sprang up all over the United States and middle and lower class people joined in on the betting scene. Betting on baseball games became popular in the 1920s. When the television was invented, sports were televised and people started betting on basketball and football. Today, the Super Bowl is one of the most bet-on football games in America.

The Internet has made placing a bet very easy with the large amount of online sportsbooks available. This can be confusing to a person who is just getting into betting. One way to eliminate that confusion is to read the online sportsbook reviews. (A sportsbook is the business that you place your bets with.) The newbie can get helpful information and knowledge about the betting process and about the different sportsbooks available online.

The person who is just starting out should pay attention to what sportsbook reviews say. You can learn about the juice (how much money a bookie makes from each bet), the amount of money that can be placed in a bet, and how soon after the event happens that you can expect his money to be delivered to you. You can also talk to friends or join online betting forums to learn more information about which is the best online sportsbook to use. Listen to their experiences and trust the judgment of experienced bettors.

Be careful. If a sportsbook review is paid for by the sportsbook, read it with a grain of salt. The business is paying for a good review so the review will be slanted in favor of the sportsbook. It won’t be an objective review.

Continued Developments in Snowboarding Terrain

If you are new to snowboarding you may not be aware of what snowboarders had access to in the early days. In the beginning of snowboarding, many resorts didn’t let snowboarders into the resort. Snowboarding was considered to be a back country activity. the idea of created terrain in a resort was limited to grooming trails or creating mogul or bump runs.

Snowboarding is a sport where a rider straps both feet to one single board and rides down the slope in a surfing type stance. this is also similar to the stance and style that a skateboard is ridden. Skateboard ramps, obstacles, and half pipes have been being constructed since around the early 1980s. Since many riders choose snowboarding because of their love of skateboarding it was only a matter of time, maybe instantly, that snowboarders wanted to build a jump, do a rail slide, and get some air between themselves and the ground.

Once snowboarding gained in popularity the resorts that allowed snowboarding got a rise in use and because of that they started making money from snowboarding. With a limited season length, resorts all over quickly started realizing that they were going to make more money if they allowed snowboarding.

Once snowboarding grew even more, the competition to attract snowboarders began to grow. What attracts snowboards in part is the option for terrain parks. Today resorts like Whistler, Keystone, or Bear Mountain are known for their terrain parks. Terrain parks have a variety of obstacles and always include a variety of types of launch jumps, rail slides, and of course half pipes. Today there are groomers that are specially trained and capable at building half-pipes, and many resorts have more than one half pipe maintained on their resort.

So if you are interested in snowboarding make sure you get down the basics on the ground first before getting any air or trying a rail-slide. It may seem like the snow is more forgiving than the cement that you are used to on your skateboard, but you’ll find quickly that you can get much higher on your snowboard.

Snowboarders vs. Skiers

Is there any reason to the difficulties that snowboarders and skiers have on the slopes of many ski resorts? In some resorts snowboarding is not allowed. Lets look at some of the similarities and differences of these two extreme sports.

Th obvious difference between snowboarding and skiing is that one skier uses two skis and one snowboarder rides on one board. The fundamental difference between these two sports is that the lines that they follow down the mountain are a bit different. This is in fact often the controversy that arises. Because of the differences in carving lines the two enthusiasts get into each others way at times. Often this is the only difference. There may be a difference in median age of snowboarders and skiers, mainly because snowboarding is a much newer sport and is still more popular among younger generations.

There may be a difference in the attitude or style of some snowboarders and skiers but it is hard to make a stark difference between the two. Some say snowboarders are more about speed than form, while cutting well formed turns is important to the skier. One can’t say this about everyone. If you watch any downhill skiing competitions you will understand.

Determining a solution for some resorts has been to create some special parks for snowboarders in particular. These “parks” are particular runs that will have jumps and a variety of obstacles for the riders to maneuver. While skiers have their mogul or bump runs, snowboarders have their half pipes. Compromises have to be the solution. If you are looking for empty slopes without anyone to get in the way, you may want to choose the back country or try taking a day off work and going to the resort mid-week. Skiers and snowboarders alike are more than likely here to stay.

Rejoice, resident Super Bowl gamblers and horse race fanatics–the online gambling industry has exploded, giving you the ability to make bets on all your favorite sports without even stepping outside of the house. Moreover, recognize that sports betting isn’t a little hobby to burn your money away. There’s a system to it–an art. To understand how it works, consider this:

Online Casino Games.

Now, while some of the dynamics are a little different compared to the real thing, make no mistake: traditional techniques of some of the best casino games still exist even in cyberspace. Sports betting is no different, so make sure you know what you’re up against. This is how sports betting works:

You’re the bettor, obviously. Let’s say you want to get in on the ‘action’ (which is the sports betting term for “betting”). What you do is visit a ‘bookie,’ who sets the handicap with the help of oddsmakers. They set these handicaps between two teams, making the betting more competitive. Oddsmakers also work with the bookies to determine the odds, which also sets the range of winnings–such as “5 to 1″ or “2 to 1.” Typically, the odds are determined by several factors: weather, injuries, the personal lives of the players, and wins vs. losses.Naturally, though, most everywhere in the States has banned sports betting due to such phenomenons as “point shavings” or bribes.

As a bettor, know these tips: your math skills, the sport itself, the situation and not the game, and your own bankroll. Don’t play the favorites. Play the underdog, especially considering a situation such as an away homecoming game against a hated rival; chances are the away team will fight harder to win! Play smart and not aggressive. Know your bookie.

It can be an enjoyable excursion from the norm of your day, but be sure to know the basics of the art of sports betting. It’s not just a hobby with your friends!

If you have found a physical activity you want to get more involved in then more than likely you are thinking about how to start training. Whether its one of the well known sports like basketball or football, or some other sport that may be less well known, one needs a plan on how to get in shape to do be effective at learning the sport. Here are a few major components to a good training routine.

  1. The most important start to an effective training routine is healthy eating habits. It is not necessary to become a member of some fad diet in order to eat healthy, but it is important to be aware of what you are eating and what it is doing to your body. Focus your eating habits on eating whole foods. Whole foods are foods that are not likely to be packaged and are found in the produce section of the supermarket or at the meat counter. Produce your own foods so you know what is in them and start to experience a flavor in your diet other than salt and sugar. Healthy eating starts with learning how to cook your own food. Packaged meals may be easy and fast but cooking whole foods yourself will be far more tasty and healthy for your body. Don’t over eat and watch your calorie intake.
  2. Aerobic exercise: finding an aerobic exercise that you like is as important as building muscle. So, figure out what you like, walking, running, swimming, biking, choose one or try them all.  Learn a way to enjoy an exercise that will build your stamina or endurance.
  3. Training: When it comes to training with weights it is best to consult a trainer and get some advice on the best methods for you and what you are trying to accomplish. Be safe and consult your doctor for any medical advice.
